Alexis Rockman’s Oceanus Explores the Fragile Power of the Sea

Journey through the intersection of art, science, and history in Oceanus, a new exhibition by Alexis Rockman. Anchored by a sweeping 8-by-24-foot oil painting, the show traces humanity’s impact on the ocean—from the age of whaling to modern seabed mining—culminating in a radiant tsunami that captures both beauty and fragility.

Ten accompanying watercolors deepen the experience, reflecting on ecosystem collapse and species survival. Commissioned by Mystic Seaport Museum, Oceanus blends maritime history with scientific insight—inviting us to consider our relationship with the ocean and the legacy we leave behind.
