The Substitutes (formerly The Subs) are a group of longtime substitute teachers and early members of the Organic Music Cooperative who turned shared downtime into a shared downbeat.
Featuring Gregg Hilker on ukulele, banjo, guitar, and assorted stringed wonders; Kris Risch on guitar; Lisa Risch on keys and tambourine; and Phil Gilbert holding down all things percussion, the band brings a loose, joyful energy to every set.
Expect a little of everything: familiar favorites, unexpected deep cuts, a handful of originals, and thoughtful nods to regional songwriters. Each member adds vocals and their own musical fingerprints, weaving together tunes ranging from The Cars to Jeffrey Foucault, The Go-Go’s to Warren Zevon, and John Smith to Eddie Allen.
What ties it all together is the chemistry—an easy, infectious rapport that makes it clear they’re having just as much fun as the audience.
